Navigating the influence of digital and social media can be daunting for Christian parents. The omnipresence of these platforms poses unique challenges, especially during the summer months when kids have extra time on their hands and are more likely to be engaged with digital media.

Here are some helpful tips to guide you through this journey while upholding your values and faith.

Understanding the Digital Landscape

These days, children are exposed to a world dominated by smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube can significantly shape opinions, trends, and self-perception.

This exposure can bring several challenges:

  1. Inappropriate Content: Despite filters and parental controls, children can encounter violent or sexually explicit videos, harmful advice on self-harm or substance abuse, or online predators.
  2. Cyberbullying: Online harassment can severely affect a child’s mental health.
  3. Screen Addiction: Excessive screen time can impact physical health, sleep, and academic performance.
  4. Peer Pressure: The need to fit in can lead to unhealthy comparisons and behaviours.
  5. Erosion of Values: The secular nature of online content can undermine family values and faith.

Philippians 4:8 is a great verse to remember: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

I can still hear my mom, in a booming voice, encouraging us to ‘go outside and play’ when I was growing up. Today, this advice is more relevant than ever. It can help develop a well-rounded personality and reduce dependency on digital entertainment.

Remember that even with a busy schedule, a healthy lifestyle incorporates physical activity, social interaction, and time for personal hobbies, not just screen time. Encourage your children to pray for guidance and strength to make wise choices online. Involve them in church activities where they can find support and friendship away from the digital world.

Proverbs 22:6 advises, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it.”

Dedicate time to family activities that involve no screens, such as board games, hiking, cooking together, or sending your kids to a local CEF 5-Day Club. Encourage your children to pursue hobbies they are passionate about and promote regular physical activity. This emphasis on balance helps ease anxiety about your children’s digital engagement, making you feel more relaxed and confident in your parenting.

Raising Christian children in the digital age requires vigilance, open communication, and a strong foundation of faith. As Christian parents, we aim to set clear boundaries, promote positive content, and help our children navigate the challenges of digital and social media influence while maintaining their values and well-being.

Remember, the goal is not to completely shield children from the digital world but to equip them with the tools and knowledge to engage with it responsibly and faithfully. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways, acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” Parenting in the digital age is challenging, but we can help our children navigate it successfully with faith, guidance, and love.
