As Canadians prepare to celebrate Canada Day, it’s a perfect time to pause and reflect on the nation’s roots—spiritually, historically, and culturally. While fireworks and festivities fill the streets, beneath the surface lies a foundational story intertwined with biblical values and Christian influence. Recognizing this connection not only deepens our appreciation for our country but also reminds us of the virtues that continue to shape us as a nation—faith, hope, unity, and service.
The lyrics of “O Canada” speak of a land “glorious and free,” echoing biblical themes of liberty and divine blessing. The phrase “God keep our land glorious and free” is more than a patriotic line; it’s a prayer rooted in faith that God’s grace has sustained our nation through countless challenges. Historically, Canada’s founders drew upon biblical principles of justice, compassion, and community—values that remain integral to our national identity.
One of the most powerful symbols connecting Canada’s Christian heritage is the very fabric of our national anthem. Written in 1908, the lyrics reflect a prayer for divine guidance and protection. The plea, “God keep our land glorious and free,” calls on divine blessing, emphasizing that our freedom and prosperity are gifts from God. This aligns with biblical passages like Psalm 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Our anthem invites us to recognize that our country’s strength is rooted in God.
Furthermore, the themes of unity and service prominent in Canada’s history mirror biblical teachings. Our nation was founded on the principles of community, striving for fairness, helping those in need, and working together toward a common good. These virtues echo Jesus’ teachings on loving our neighbour (Matthew 22:39) and serving others selflessly (Mark 10:45). In celebrating Canada Day, we are reminded to uphold these biblical principles—whether through acts of kindness, justice, or spiritual devotion.
Canada’s Christian roots are evidenced in the nation’s institutions, from our founding charters to the widespread influence of faith-based organizations dedicated to charity, education, and humanitarian aid. Many of our early settlers carried their faith into the fabric of our society, planting churches, establishing schools, and promoting moral values that still influence Canadian culture today.
As believers, we’re called to celebrate not just our nation’s achievements but also to pray for its continued growth in righteousness and justice. Canada Day becomes an opportunity to affirm our identity rooted in faith, a nation blessed by divine guidance and called to reflect biblical virtues in our everyday lives.
So, this July 1st, let’s celebrate with gratitude and a renewed commitment to uphold the biblical foundation of our country. As we sing “O Canada,” let us also offer a prayer, asking God to continue guiding our leaders, healing divisions, and inspiring a nation built on faith, hope, and love.
Happy Canada Day! May God’s grace continue to shine upon the great land we call home.

God keep our land.
Blessings
